RPIG (Ireland)
Teagasc has responsibility for research and development in pig production. The research programme covers a range of areas including nutrition and management, sow productivity, animal health and welfare, environment and food safety. Knowledge Transfer personnel provide an independent business and technology service to farmers, based on the analysis of herd performance data, feed costs and financial records and benchmarking these against industry averages using the Teagasc e-Profit Monitor system. They also provide a range of education & training courses relevant to the pig sector.
Expertise
Teagasc Pig Development Department comprises an integrated team of four researchers and five knowledge transfer specialist, plus a number of postdocs and PhD students, all working on a broad range of areas related to pig production. Supporting the research programme is a new state of the art National Pig Research Facility at Moorepark. The knowledge transfer team have a wealth of experience in disseminating research and technology findings through their business & technology service via farm visits, herd performance monitoring, discussion groups, workshops, annual conferences and newsletters. They also provide Level 5 & 6 courses in pig production for farm staff and new entrants.
Involvement
Ciarán Carroll is Head of the Teagasc Pig Department and has worked as a Specialist Pig Development Officer since 1993. He is the RPIG lead for Ireland and will support WP7 (Regional Knowledge Exchange).
Edgar Garcia Manzanilla is a Research Officer (Pigs) at the Teagasc Pig Department. His interests include nutrition, health and welfare of pigs. He is a Technical Partner of WP2 (Health Management) and will support WP7 (Regional Knowledge Exchange).

Ciarán Carroll, Head of Pig Development
Ciarán Carroll is Head of the Teagasc Pig Department and has worked as a Specialist Pig Development Officer since 1993. In this role he has delivered and independent business and technology service to pig producers in Ireland and has a wealth of experience disseminating research and technology findings via farm visits, herd performance monitoring, discussion groups, workshops, annual conferences and newsletters. He has also been involved in the provision of pig education & training courses.
Edgar Garcia Manzanilla, Research Officer Pig Production
A veterinarian with a PhD in animal nutrition, Edgar is a Research Officer at Teagasc Pig Development Department. He has huge experience in coordinating & conducting research projects and a broad network of national and international links. He is has an integral role in knowledge transfer at Teagasc via farm visits, discussion groups, conferences and newsletters.
