IRTA is a research institute owned by the Government of Catalonia assigned to the Department of Agriculture, and it is ruled by private regulations. Implementation of Welfare Quality® adapted protocols to evaluate animal welfare on farm and at slaughter level for audit purposes.

Identification of animal welfare bottlenecks for the Coordinated European Animal Welfare Network (EUWelNet). SANCO/2012/G3/EUWELNET/SI2.635078 (2013).

Training and dissemination activities for farmers, veterinarians and other stakeholders on animal welfare practical implementation.


The present project EU Pig will present a WP dealing with animal welfare topics that are at present bottlenecks still not solved to properly implement the EU animal welfare legislation or further improve welfare according to farmers’ perspective. Our specific main tasks in the project are:

Our team

Dr. Emma Fàbrega, Researcher on Animal Welfare

Dr. Emma Fàbrega holds a Veterinarian Sciences degree (1995), Master (2000), PhD in Animal Production (2002) and Msc in Applied Animal Behaviour and Animal Welfare (1998). Since 2011 she Diplomate in Animal Welfare Science, Ethics and Law, by the European College of Animal Welfare and Behaviour Medicine. She coordinates national and international projects on assessment of animal welfare on farm, use of precision farming to improve animal welfare, animal welfare in sustainable production systems and alternatives to painful procedures.

Dr. Antonio Velarde, Head of the Animal Welfare Subprogram

Dr. Antonio Velarde holds a Veterinarian Sciences degree (1995), Master (1998) and PhD (2000) in Animal Production, and Master (2008) in Science and Welfare of Laboratory Animals from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. From 2011 he is Diplomate in Animal Welfare Science, Ethics and Law, by the European College of Animal Welfare and Behaviour Medicine. Currently he is head of the Animal Welfare Subprogram in IRTA and member of the Animal Health and Animal Welfare Panel of the EFSA.

Dr. Antoni Dalmau, Researcher on Animal Welfare

Dr Antoni Dalmau, veterinarian degree, Master in Animal Production, Master in Meat Industry management, PhD in Veterinary Sciences by the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona. He coordinates the implementation of welfare protocols on commercial conditions such as the Welfare Quality ® His field of expertise are animal welfare during transport and slaughter, on farm and abattoir assessment of animal welfare, fear, pain, social and feeding behaviour of farm animals and wild ruminants.

Xènia Moles, Technician on Animal Welfare

Ms. Xènia Moles has a veterinarian degree from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. She has been involved in all the technical assistance of welfare assessments of the group. She coordinates the collection of data from the Spanish RPIG summary of experience / skills relevant to the EU PiG project.
